Welcome

Located in Footscray, James Barker House specialises in providing 24-hour care for all older people, including those who are marginalised or at risk of becoming homeless. Our tailored programs are designed to uphold the wellbeing and dignity of residents and empower them to lead a healthy and happy lifestyle.

James Barker House has spacious, sunlit single rooms with ensuite bathrooms with easy access to communal dining, lounge and activity rooms plus gardens and courtyards.

We are close to public transport with access to local markets, cafes and other amenities. The Centre bus is available for scheduled day trips and we have close ties with families, friends and supporters, and the local community to maintain close community connections.

Our Services

James Barker House offers 24-hour permanent residential care including memory support, palliative care and behavioural and mental health support; and respite (short-term) care. We also offer eligible residents NDIS services with in-house NDIS support coordination and staff.

We are open to all people requiring residential aged care with a special focus on those who are marginalised. We have programs for those dealing with alcohol, mental and behavioural health issues, and are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless as a result.

Each staff member has undergone reference and security checks to ensure they are fully qualified, experienced and are passionate about working in the aged care sector with special regard for those who are disadvantaged and have complex needs. Emotional intelligence and sensitivity to diversity are other key factors in recruiting our staff.

Food plays a huge role in maintaining a healthy and happy lifestyle so we take great care in our food. Meals are cooked daily onsite by a qualified chef in consultation with the dietitian, residents and their families. The menu is rotated regularly to promote choice and take advantage of what is in season. Each meal has a selection of high-protein, vegetarian and modified options. We also cater for special dietary and cultural requirements.

Individual nutrition programs can also be organised as required.

James Barker House has raised vegetable garden beds and beautiful gardens which residents help to maintain. There are plenty of outdoor areas where residents can spend time doing activities or simply relax and unwind.

Chickens, a very chatty cockatoo, and two cuddly cats, are also all part of the family.

Scheduled visits from the local GP and other Allied Health services as needed, including physiotherapist, podiatrist, speech therapist, audiologist, optometrist and occupational therapist.

The Centre Chaplains play an important role in bringing our holistic model of care to life. Whatever a person's beliefs, our Chaplains are here to assist in their spiritual and emotional journey, if they wish.
