Friendship Flourishes at Kubirri
At Kubirri Aged Care Centre, friendship has become an important part of everyday life for residents Rosetta, Pamela and Sheila. Through shared hobbies, regular visits and caring conversations, the three women have formed a close bond that brings warmth and companionship to their days.
Rosetta moved to Kubirri from Mossman about two years ago and quickly settled into life at the centre after meeting Pamela in Ribbonwood Wing. “We developed relationships very quickly,” Rosetta said. “Pamela is someone that I can just sit with and have a conversation.”
Although Pamela later moved to another wing, the friendship continued to grow. “Every now and then, she comes and visit me in my room, and I go and visit her in her area,” Rosetta explained. Through Pamela, she also met Sheila, who she describes as “a lovely person.”
Pamela arrived at Kubirri two years ago in May and remembers instantly connecting with Rosetta. “We just hit it off straight away and created relationship right from the start,” she said.
Today, the three women regularly spend time together enjoying crafts and meals in the sunroom. Their creative interests may differ, but they enjoy each other’s company while working side by side. “Sheila does her colouring in and I do my diamond art,” Pamela said. “Rosetta does crochet and knitting – we do our own craft but together.”
The friendships have also extended beyond the centre, with Pamela’s outside visitors becoming acquainted with the group. “My friends from outside Kubirri come and visit me here regularly and would join us and now become friends with Sheila and Rosetta too,” she said.
For Sheila, who moved to Kubirri more than a year ago, the friendships have made a lasting impact. “I do not have local friends, but I got them,” she said of Pamela and Rosetta. “They include me in their conversations and that is nice.”
When asked what she enjoys most about living at Kubirri, Sheila’s answer was simple but heartfelt: “Friendship.”
Together, the three women show how meaningful connections can enrich life at Kubirri, creating not just companionship, but a true sense of community and belonging.
